Durango Mountain Biking

Durango Mountain Biking

Many people think of skiing when they think of Durango and naturally figured that the busiest season would be the wintertime because of the presence of Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort.  The truth is that summer is far busier than wintertime when it comes to tourists in our community.  Part of that draw is caused by an unbelievable amount of mountain bike trails and rides.  Now, I am not a fat tire bike rider, but I have known several professional bike riders over the years that live in Durango and they say that it is the best.

Colorado Trail starts in Durango and goes all the way to Denver. The Hermosa Creek trail starts by Purgatory and runs for 20 miles down Hermosa Creek.  It is often considered one of the top 20 trails in the country.  There are probably 100 different trails scattered around Durango, so you will never get your fill whether you’re looking for a smooth easy ride or a steep technical one.

The Iron Horse Classic is a bicycle race, actually a series of races, that is held Memorial Day weekend every year.  In one race, contestants raise the narrow gauge train from Durango all the way to Silverton 50 some miles away!  They start the race at 6512 feet above sea level and go over 2 mountain passes, one of which is 10,910 feet above sea level and end up in Silverton at a bit over 9300 feet.  There are mountain bike races that week as well is criterion races.  It is lots and lots of fun and literally hundreds of participants come from all over the country and even the world to enjoy the festivities.
